Trust me, smough's butt stomp may seem bigger but if you can fast roll you should be able to get out of the blast radius in two.
Buffed smough has a charge that doesn't miss. Wait for ornstein to attack and roll away from the pillar, so you're further from smoug. If smough is defeated first, ornstein will increase greatly in size, drastically changing his moveset in the process.
